"I need to think about it." "I don't know what I want yet." "I'll sort myself out first, then I'll start." This sounds reasonable — but it often turns into endless waiting for clarity that never comes.
Clarity isn't something you find by sitting still. It shows up in the process of moving.
Why not knowing is completely normal
Many of us carry a belief that a person should have a big goal, a calling, a clear sense of direction. When that's missing, it can feel like something is wrong.
But most people don't know their "main purpose in life." And that's not a problem — it's honesty. The problem starts when the absence of a goal becomes a reason to do nothing at all.
A question that helps you get unstuck
Instead of "what do I want from life?" try asking a different question:
"If it were October right now, what would I want to see in my life?"
This horizon — a few months out — is close enough to be concrete. Far enough that something could actually change. Most people find this question much easier to answer than "what do you want from life."
Choose a direction, not a big goal
Sometimes there's no clear goal, but there's a sense of which area of life needs something to change. That's a good enough starting point.
Directions to choose from:
- Health: sleep, nutrition, movement, energy
- Finances: stability, income growth, savings
- Relationships: connection, communication, quality time with people who matter
- Rest and recovery: time for yourself, hobbies, feeling alive
Pick one direction. Not the one you "should" choose — the one that's hurting the most right now, or the one you're most curious about.
Find your current need, not a grand goal
A big goal is great, but it's not always accessible immediately. A current need is always accessible.
Ask yourself: what do I need right now? Not in five years — right now. More sleep? Less anxiety? The feeling that something is moving? Just to untangle a work situation?
That's your entry point. Everything else builds from there.
The first step matters more than the right direction
Don't wait for the perfect goal. Start moving in any plausible direction. Movement gives you information. Staying still doesn't.
"It's normal not to know right away. Often the path begins with one simple step."
